Reading for 1/26

Right off the bat in Chapter 2 of The Omnivore's Dilemma, I was struck with the production of the Naylor farm. In the one day that Pollan spent on the farm, he and the owner planted enough seed to produce approximately 1.8 million pounds of corn. One hundred and twenty nine people rely on the Naylor's 470 acres of fields for sustenance. It would seem that the Naylor's would be doing very well financially, based on this fact, however the farm cannot support the four of them financially, nor can it support them with food. Another part of this chapter surprised me, and that was the source of Iowa's food. Iowa is a state that consists of a lot of farms, and yet 80% of Iowan food is imported from surrounding areas.

They Say I Say started by talking about how to write an introduction. It talked about how it is a good idea to start with presenting an opposing view to the one you are trying to prove. It also talked about not leaving the reader hanging too long when it comes to presenting your argument. The main point that I took from the summarizing section was that you must be able to put aside your own feelings, no matter if their belief is the same as yours.
